About Ocean Whitefish in Mexico
How to recognize it
Ocean whitefish are elongated tilefish with a small, rounded head and a long dorsal fin that runs nearly to the tail. Color is a soft tan or yellowish brown, paling toward the belly, with yellowish fins. The eyes are large, and the forehead slopes steeply, giving a gentle, almost blunt profile.
Where and when in Mexico
In Mexico this fish goes by pierna, a name widely used by Baja skippers. It favors sand and rubble bottoms near reefs, from fairly shallow water down to a few hundred feet, and is common along the Pacific coast from the Ensenada area south through San Quintín, Isla de Cedros and the San Benito Islands, as well as in parts of the Sea of Cortez. It bites year-round. Ensenada stands out in Mexico Fish Reports' data, with more than 21,000 counted since 2005, making it one of the most frequently logged bottom species on that fleet; San Felipe boats added several hundred in the late 2000s.
How it's fished
Dropper loops with shrimp flies or small hooks baited with squid strips catch most of them, fished over the softer ground surrounding rockfish reefs. Because they often school, a productive drift can load the deck quickly. Small jigs and lures worked near the bottom also connect, and anglers sometimes pick them up while fishing for rockfish and sheephead.
Good to know
Most range from a few pounds up to around 10. The meat is mild and white, though best eaten fresh rather than frozen.
