About California Sheephead in Mexico
How to recognize it
Few reef fish are as easy to identify. Adult males carry a black head and tail separated by a broad reddish-pink midsection, plus a white chin and a fleshy forehead bump. Females are a more uniform pinkish-red. Every sheephead begins life as a female, and larger individuals change to male, so the pattern hints at size and age. The protruding canine-like teeth are built for crushing urchins, crabs and mussels.
Where and when in Mexico
The Mexican name is vieja californiana, though many Baja anglers simply say vieja. Rocky reefs and kelp along the Pacific side of Baja hold good numbers, from the Coronado Islands and Todos Santos Bay south past Isla de Cedros, and the species also lives in the northern Sea of Cortez. Fishing is steady year-round. Mexico Fish Reports' counts show more than 2,600 sheephead from Ensenada since 2004, and San Felipe boats logged several hundred in the late 2000s.
How it's fished
Most come as a bonus on rockfish and bottom trips, biting squid, shrimp or crab on dropper rigs fished tight to the rocks. Anglers targeting them specifically use stout gear and fresh crustacean baits, since sheephead pull hard and try to wrap lines on the reef. Lighter-tackle fishing with small jigs in shallow kelp is productive too.
Good to know
The firm white meat is well regarded, sometimes compared to lobster when prepared in chunks. Big males are slow-growing, which is why many skippers encourage releasing the trophy fish.
