SHORT ATTENTION SPAN FISHING REPORT

WEATHER:  We had some hot hot weeks hitting 115-120 with the humidity.  Then we had Hurricane Genevieve come up.  It didn’t hit us directly, but it did get windy and really rough a few days and dropped a bit of rain here and there.  Took a few days to get back to regular weather.

WATER:  Got rough while the hurricane passed us by and the waters got cooler and cloudy for a few days which affected the fish which took a hit until things cleared up.

FISH HOOKED THIS WEEK:  Tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, striped marlin, pargo, bonito, roosterfish, jack crevalle, cabrilla, pargo.

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

True to form…why should anything be any different!

This erratic and unpredictable fishing season continued to be erratic and unpredictable as we hit the half-way mark of the season.

We had pretty decent fishing in July. For the most part, some of the most consistent fishing of the season with some solid fishing.  The big tuna continued to crash on the far side and north side of Cerralvo Island with fish running 40-100 pounds or larger giving most of our anglers much more than they baragained for but alot of fun on these trophy fish.

Big dorado as well continued in many areas scattered from La Paz through Espirito Santo Island and the channels toward Cerralvo Island.  Good-sized bulls in the 20-30 pound class were not unusual.  The cool thing is that more school-sized 5 -10 pounders were showing up.  Maybe not the big trophies, but for many of our less-experienced anglers…sure alot of fun hooking a dozen or more of these (releasing many) and just continuous action compared to hooking just one gigantic fish for the day!

Surprisingly, also we’re still getting some big 50-pound clss roosterfish.  This is unusual. Usually the big roosters are pretty scarce about now, but we hooked and release several this last period.  Add to that the occasional marlin, sailfish, wahoo plus feisty bonito and hard-charging jack crevalle and it made for some fun days of fishing on the water most of the time, despite the occasional boat that just didn’t hit the right spot at the right time.  Most boats on most days hit fish and everyone who wanted to take home fish or have us cook some up, took fish home .

Then, Mother Nature came along in the form of Hurricane Genevieve . Gave us quite. scare as it came roaring up the Pacific Coast.  This beast of a storm became a category 5 blaster with winds up to 150 mph!

Fortunately, it roared up towards us then veered out into the Pacific Ocean.  Nonetheless, it did bring some strong winds and big waves into the Sea of Cortez and surrounding areas even though the storm did not directly hit us.

We’ll take some cloudy skies over a hurricane direct hit any day!  However, there was enough disturbance for a few days to send in big waves and strong winds that kept us from fishing certain areas, not to mention made it rough on our anglers on the water.

It certainly affected the fishing as waters got cooler, rougher and bumpier.  Big fish scattered.  The schools scattered.  We still got a smattering of fun fish, but the hot bite we had before the storm diminished quite a bit.   It took a few days to get back on track and for the waters to settle down and for us to find the fishing spots again.

But, as I write this, things are slowing coming back online.

BTW…it’s been hot as heck!  With the humidity we were hitting 115-120 degrees some days.  It’s gotten a big “cooler” lately.  Only 108 yesterday…LOL.  Stay hydrated and in the shade as much as possible!
