About California Halibut in Mexico

How to recognize it

This large flatfish lies on its side on sandy bottoms, with both eyes on the upper side, which is mottled brown or gray for camouflage. Unlike many flounders, it can be either left- or right-eyed. The mouth is big and toothy, extending back past the eye, and the lateral line arches high over the pectoral fin, a quick way to separate it from other Pacific flatfish.

Where and when in Mexico

Officially lenguado californiano, it is also simply called lenguado along Baja. Sandy bays and shallow coastal flats on the Pacific side hold the most, including Todos Santos Bay near Ensenada, Bahía San Quintín and Bahía Magdalena. Spring through summer is generally the peak, when fish move shallow to spawn and feed. Mexico Fish Reports' counts show a modest number from Ensenada over the years, since halibut are mostly a bonus fish rather than a targeted species on those boats.

How it's fished

Drifting live sardines, anchovies or small mackerel across sand bottoms on a sliding-sinker or Carolina rig is the go-to method. Swimbaits bounced slowly along the bottom work well, as do drift rigs with a trailing hook. Shore anglers catch them from beaches and near estuary mouths. Patience on the hookset pays, as halibut often grab the bait and swim with it before eating.

Good to know

Most fish run 5 to 20 pounds, with larger ones occasionally reported. The thick white fillets are excellent. Use a net to land them, since halibut thrash near the surface.
