About California Barracuda in Mexico
How to recognize it
The California barracuda is long and slender, with a pointed head, a jutting lower jaw and a mouthful of fang-like teeth. The back is gray-blue to brownish, the sides silver, and the tail is yellowish on adult fish. It lacks the dark blotches of the great barracuda and is far smaller, with most fish measuring two to three feet.
Where and when in Mexico
Called barracuda plateada officially and barracuda californiana by anglers, this is a Pacific Baja fish. Schools move north along the coast in spring and stay into summer and early fall, feeding over kelp beds, reefs and sandy flats. Ensenada is the center of the action in our data: Mexico Fish Reports' counts show more than seven thousand from Ensenada boats, making it one of the most frequently caught species there. Todos Santos Bay, Punta Banda, the Coronado Islands and San Quintín are well-known areas.
How it's fished
Ensenada sportboats chum with live sardines and let anglers fly-line baits, often with a short wire or heavy mono leader to protect against teeth. Casting chrome jigs, spoons and swimbaits works well when schools are active, and trolled feathers find scattered fish. Light to medium spinning gear is enough.
Good to know
Barracuda flesh is soft, so it should be bled and iced quickly. Cooked fresh on the grill or smoked, it is a good table fish. Use pliers to unhook them.
