About Barred Sand Bass in Mexico

How to recognize it

A sturdy, grayish-olive bass with several dark diagonal bars along its sides and a pale belly. The third spine of the dorsal fin is noticeably taller than the others, which is the clearest way to separate it from the kelp bass, whose spines are more even and whose back carries pale blotches rather than bars. Close relatives in the cabrilla family, the two often come up on the same trip.

Where and when in Mexico

Cabrilla de arena is a fish of the Baja California Pacific coast, where it lives along sand flats and the edges where sand meets rock, reef or kelp. Ensenada is the center of the action, with Mexico Fish Reports' Ensenada counts tallying it consistently for two decades; Todos Santos Bay, Punta Banda and the waters toward San Quintín are reliable areas. Summer is prime, when warming water draws sand bass into spawning aggregations over sandy bottom. Most fish weigh 1–4 pounds.

How it's fished

Ensenada sportboats and pangas drift or anchor over sand-rock transitions and drop squid strips, live anchovy or sardine on dropper loops and sliding sinkers. Plastic swimbaits and grubs on leadheads, bounced along the bottom, are just as effective and are a local favorite. Light to medium conventional or spinning tackle is plenty for most fish.

Good to know

Sand bass grow slowly, and their summer spawning aggregations make them easy to overharvest. Keeping a few for the table and releasing the rest helps the fishery. Gently returned fish survive well from typical depths.
